The Mother of All Backpacks!!

Not really... but this backpack is pretty ginormous. I made it all this morning, it took a whopping 7 hours. Which isn't actually that long especially considering there were a lot of details and I didn't run into any problems. Just a casual morning exercise? haha. I went super detailed on this one to show my process...

This was a custom order for a backpack with given dimensions (17" x 14" x 7.5") and specific pockets like the front pocket on the LLBean bag below and a small inside pocket. How well did I do?? You be the judge:

First I made the smaller front zipper compartment (with logo), sewed the larger front zipper compartment to it, and then sewed it to the front.

Next I worked on the sides. I cut out the pieces for the top with the zipper and then the sides, and then the bottom. Then I sewed all of the pieces together and sewed it to the front.

Thirdly I assembled the back; I sewed foam into the back piece, made the straps with foam inserts, and attached a tag. Then I pinned the webbing and straps to the back where they would be sewn on.

Afterwards I made the smaller inside pocket for the inside of the front and sewed it on (before the side piece was sewn on).

And finally I sewed the back piece on and VOILA!!! Finished. Front, side and back view:

For scale I took a picture of it on me. It is QUITE large!!

Rainbow Brite for Halloween!!!

So this year I was Rainbow Brite for Halloween. And of course I had to make my costume. Here's an image of the original Rainbow Brite:

I wanted to do something that was a little bit of an update on her outfit and make it in parts so that I could wear separately when it wasn't Halloween... even though I would totally wear the whole thing together when it's not Halloween (let's be honest). I decided to make a 3 piece outfit consisting of a dress, a belt and a jacket. So..... Here it is!!!!!

Belt front and back

Jacket!!!
TA-DA!!!!! Love it.

6 Word Memoir Blurb Book Cover Illustration!

The entirety of the senior class in Illustration at Parsons the New School for Design was asked by Smith Magazine's Larry Smith to submit illustrated 6 work memoirs: (your life story told in 6 words) as a fun project/assignment. Larry loved our stuff and wanted to make a book out of our submissions. I spent the afternoon at Blurb's pop up shop in Soho with Larry and Lisa, the associate editor at Smith Mag to do an illustration for the cover.

We talked about what the plan was, to have a prominent 6 large on the cover and an illustration underneath, and then I drew a sketch:
Here's what came out:
Then I scanned, formatted, and colored it in illustrator with the finishing touches:
They loved it!! Can't wait to see the printed book with this baby on the cover.
